This dresser was built to replace an older one, the customer had a new kitchen fitted and wanted something with a more modern feel.

Construction and Installation

The timber for the carcass was selected from joinery grade redwood. This began rough sawn from the timber merchant then planed and ‘thicknessed’ by our joiner to size and shape from scratch. Virtually no screws or nails were used in the construction of the cabinet, doors or drawers until final assembly when screws were used to connect the oak top.

The doors were modelled on a popular ‘shaker’ variety with blind mortice and tenon joints. The plywood panels set into a rebate created by a groove cut into the inner edge. The drawers were a robust 22mm and held together front and back by blind dovetails. This was to enable a smooth outer facing surface and sit on oak runners. The drawers’ bases were of 9mm ply and set into a rebate.

The oak worktop was constructed from several character grade planks. They were butt joined (with a concealed tongue and groove in the centre for added strength). They were then sanded smooth to appear almost as a single piece. As with the two crockery shelves, oiled with tung oil (which is organic and food safe). The crockery shelves were rebated into the upper part of the unit.

The grooved moulding and trim was created for and was unique to the piece. The door and drawer handles were sourced to match those in the client’s kitchen as closely as possible.
